Steve Addington este cel mai impatimit om al marii care isi traieste viata prin prisma valurilor pe care le cucereste cu placa lui de surf. Intors in orasul lui natal din Malibu acesta observa cum acest minunat sport a devenit mai mult o industrie prin care marile firme de sponsorizare incearca sa revolutioneze conceptul de surfing. Nu numai ca au corupt imaginea sportului dar si-au extins aceste idei pana in pragul in care surfingul ajunge un joc video in realitate virtuala si chiar si Reality Show. Numai ca Steve nu vrea sa fie un personaj in aceasta realitate virtuala si isi petrece timpul liber practicand ceea ce ii place lui mai mult sa faca – surfing.

Cu toate conturile bancare blocate, fara bani, tradat de prieteni, Steve se gaseste in mijlocul unei crize existentiale si este impins intr-un colt din care parca nu se gaseste nici o scapare atunci cand dispar si valurile de pe mare. Dar ajutat de managerul si mentorul lui, dar si dragostea din partea lui Danni, Steve are o singura sansa de a reusi sa treaca peste aceasta depresie in lipsa valurilor.
